One NBA writer is proposing that the New York Knicks trade for Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George this offseason.

Our own James Piercey of NBA Analysis Network proposed that the Knicks send Evan Fournier, Derrick Rose, Obi Toppin, Immanuel Quickley, and three draft picks to the Clippers for George. Given the Clippers’ failed attempts to win a championship, a pivot could be an intriguing option.

“This may not be a Clippers fan’s dream,” Piercey wrote. “It’s still a solid return. Let’s start with the young players. Quickley has star potential. This is a young guard who can create his own shot. Quickley is also a fantastic point-of-attack defender.”

“On the other hand, Toppin is more of a defensive playmaker. He’s got quick instincts that allow him to jump passing lanes. Toppin can also guard multiple positions,” Piercey explained. “Finally, two first-round picks and a swap is not a bad haul, either. The Clippers may not be getting the type of package here that they sent out for George. Those days are gone. Still, this is a good return in light of the context.”

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Paul George, Los Angeles Clippers & New York Knicks Updates

As for the Knicks, now is the time to take the next step with a bold trade move. Jalen Brunson was superb in the playoffs but was letdown by his supporting cast. George would provide a major talent boost on the wing that could propel New York on the big stage.

“By contrast, this is a win-now move for the Knicks. With that in mind, we almost had them moving RJ Barrett. That could have made sense. Barrett has underperformed during his Knicks tenure. That might be why the Clippers wouldn’t be interested,” Piercey explained. “Anyway, it’s a moot point. The Knicks could shift Barrett to the 2 and go big, or they could have him run their second unit. Either way, this is about adding Paul George. Sure, he’s aging and injury prone. George is still one of the best two-way wings in the NBA.”

George signed a four-year, $176 million maximum contract extension with the Clippers in December 2020. The six-time All-NBA forward will make $45.6 million next season. He has a player option worth $48.8 million for the 2024-25 season.
