One NBA writer won’t rule out the New York Knicks trying to trade for star shooting guard Donovan Mitchell again.

Peter Botte of the New York Post thinks the Knicks will be linked to a Mitchell trade again.

“While the Knicks will search elsewhere via the trade market this summer to augment their roster in hopes of taking the next step toward title contention, Mitchell’s status will continue to bear watching over the next two years due to his ongoing flirtation with his hometown team,” Botte wrote. “The Knicks will look elsewhere for a roster upgrade this summer, but revisiting a pursuit of Mitchell is something to keep an eye on in the near future.”

Mitchell thought he was going to get traded to the Knicks last offseason. However, the All-Star got dealt to the Cleveland Cavaliers instead. New York and Cleveland met in the first round of the 2023 playoffs and the Knicks beat Mitchell and the Cavs in five games.

In November 2020, Mitchell signed a five-year, $163 million rookie scale extension with the Utah Jazz. The 26-year-old will make $32.6 million next season and $34.8 million in 2024-25. Mitchell can become an unrestricted free agent in 2025 if he declines his 2025-26 player option worth $37.1 million.

Mitchell was born and raised in New York. Two of his friends, Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart, played for the Knicks. If the Cavaliers don’t advance past the first round of the playoffs next year, don’t be surprised if the Mitchell-to-Knicks rumors heat up once again.
