With that said, Deandre Ayton is a bit complicated. The fact that he seemingly quit on two consecutive playoff runs doesn’t bode well for his stock. 

Still, any team acquiring him will have to look at what he’s been at his best. At his best, Ayton has looked like a defensive anchor with a nice soft touch around the rim. This is a big man who can finish pick and rolls at a highly efficient rate. 

In other words, he’s exactly what the Dallas Mavericks need – in theory. Ayton should be a perfect compliment to Luka Doncic in pick-and-roil.

Meanwhile, Dallas has needed a big man to anchor their defense for years.

Of course, the Mavericks have a more pressing priority this summer. They need ro retain Kyrie Irving in free agency. If they can’t, they may not want to surrender assets for Ayton.
