NBA legend Isiah Thomas has some advice for Boston Celtics small forward Jaylen Brown.

The Detroit Pistons icon told Steve Bulpett of Heavy Sports that Brown should sign the supermax extension with the Celtics this summer.

“Take the money,” Thomas told Heavy Sports through a laugh. “Take the money.”

The Celtics and Brown can agree to a supermax contract extension this offseason since the All-Star made an All-NBA team this season. Even though Brown struggled in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, Brian Windhorst of ESPN is reporting that the Celtics will likely sign their talented swingman to the supermax extension.

“In talking to people on both sides, I think there’s a very good chance they’re gonna find ground on that,” Windhorst said on his podcast.

Keith Smith of Spotrac broke down what a supermax extension would look like for Brown, who averaged 26.6 points, 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists during the 2022-23 regular season. The extension would be a five-year deal worth around $290 million.

  • 2024-25: $50,050,000
  • 2025-26: $54,054,000
  • 2026-27: $58,058,000
  • 2027-28: $62,062,000
  • 2028-29: $66,066,000
  • Total: five years, $290,290,000

After the Celtics lost Game 7 to the Heat, Boston superstar Jayson Tatum talked about how it’s very important for Brown to be his teammate moving forward.

“It’s extremely important,” Tatum said. “He’s one of the best players in this league. He plays both ends of the ball and still is relatively young. And he’s accomplished a lot so far in his career. So, I think it’s extremely important.”

Brown has career averages of 17.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.2 assists with the Celtics. He took responsibility for Boston losing Game 7 to the Heat.

“We failed,” Brown said. “I failed. We let the whole city down. … More pain of coming up short. All in all, I think the year was a great year. Those guys in that locker room, through any circumstance, have stepped up, even from the start of the year, how things started off with our coaching staff, with all the different turmoil that we’ve experienced throughout the year, injuries, whatever. These guys have been a resilient group.”
