Why The Utah Jazz Do The Deal
In some respects, these teams make for an interesting comparison.
The Rockets tanked for three consecutive seasons. Some thought the Jazz would do the same. In 2022-23, the Jazz were too good to accomplish that goal.
Yet, they were too mediocre to make a playoff run. That’s part of the calculus here. The Jazz could justify this deal by saying they’re getting worse to improve their long-term outlook.

On the other hand, they could also just feel that they’re loaded with big men. Walker Kessler is likely the starting big man of the future. Lauri Markkanen is by far their best player.
A wing who can slot in at the 3 like Tate could fit their rotation more easily. Throw in a first-round pick, and the Jazz should be convinced to part with Olynyk.
If they’re lucky, it might help them get a top-5 pick next season.
