The Houston Rockets drew the fourth overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft. Did they get lucky?
It depends on your perspective. Of course, the Rockets wanted to land the first pick. Every team in the lottery had an eye on Victor Wembanyama: only one team could land the first pick.
With that in mind, the Rockets will have options at fourth. At the moment, the most popular selection is Amen Thompson. He’s an outlier athlete with prodigious floor vision. If he could shoot, he’d have a real shot at going second overall in this draft.
He can’t. With that in mind, the Rockets need to surround Thompson with spacing if they do select him. If he’s got shooters around him, they’ll be able to maximize his early career impact.
Landing a big man who can space the floor might be key to making this work.
Could the Rockets reunite with Kelly Olynyk of the Utah Jazz with that in mind?
