Why The Los Angeles Lakers Do The Deal
Frankly, the Lakers could justify this deal whether or not James retires.
They could even justify moving James. Yes, this organization is coming off of a Conference Finals appearance. Sure, that would ordinarily give them something to build on.
Only, James is 38. If he’s in the NBA next season, he won’t be for much longer. Moreover, he may see a need to manage his regular season minutes moving forward.

Anyway, we’ve digressed. Whether James is back or not, the Lakers are old and incredibly light on assets.
This deal has them receiving two intriguing young players and four unprotected first-round picks. That’s a justifiable decision regardless of James’ status.
