Raptors Interviewed Steve Nash For Head Coaching Job

The Toronto Raptors interviewed Hall of Famer Steve Nash for their head coaching job after firing NBA champion Nick Nurse, according to Shams Charania and Joe Vardon of The Athletic.

Nash played his high school basketball at Saint Michaels University School in Victoria, Canada.

Nash is one of the best players in NBA history. He averaged 14.3 points and 8.5 assists during his playing career with the Phoenix Suns, Dallas Mavericks, and Los Angeles Lakers and won two MVPs with the Suns. The 49-year-old made eight All-Star teams and seven All-NBA teams and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018.

The Brooklyn Nets hired Nash as their head coach in September 2020 due to his close relationship with two-time Finals MVP Kevin Durant. Nash and Durant worked together when KD was on the Golden State Warriors.

Nash compiled a 94-67 record with the Nets in the regular season and a 7-13 mark in the playoffs. Brooklyn never got past the second round of the postseason with Nash and fired him this season in November after getting off to a 2-5 start.

Kyrie Irving and Durant wound up requesting trades later in the season, with Irving landing in Dallas and Durant going to Phoenix.

The Raptors parted ways with head coach Nick Nurse after their season ended. Toronto lost to the Chicago Bulls in the 9-10 play-in game and didn’t qualify for the playoffs. Nurse went 227-163 with the Raptors in the regular season and 25-16 in the postseason. He won the 2019 championship over the Warriors in six games and the 2019-20 Coach of the Year Award. Nurse is considered one of the most brilliant offensive minds in the NBA.

The Raptors’ roster is headlined by Fred VanVleet, Pascal Siakam, Scottie Barnes, OG Anunoby, and Gary Trent Jr. VanVleet and Trent Jr. can become unrestricted free agents this summer if they decline their 2023-24 player options.
