After going undrafted two years ago, Austin Reaves has become a key piece to the Los Angeles Lakers supporting cast, especially in the NBA playoffs. His massive step forward this year could be a blessing and a curse for the organization moving forward.

Following a solid rookie season, Reaves took on a bigger role for the Lakers in 2023. He started in 22 of the 64 games he played in and averaged 13.0 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.4 assists. Reaves has stepped it up even more in the playoffs, averaging close to 17 points and shooting 44.2% from beyond the arc.

When this season comes to a close, Reaves will become a restricted free agent. The Lakers will have the opportunity to match any offer sheet, but some are starting to believe they could be priced out in the open market.

During a recent installment of his newsletter, NBA insider Marc Stein touched on Reaves’ impending free agency. It was there he stated that the 24-year-old could receive multiple offers this summer outside of what the Lakers might want to pay him moving forward.

“Austin Reaves has become hot commodity during this Los Angeles Lakers playoff run. Reaves will be a restricted free agent this summer,” Stein wrote. “With only two years of service, Reaves is also subject to the Arenas Provision.”

“Because of that status, the Lakers can match any offers Reaves may get as a free agent,” Stein explained. “And Reaves is likely to get at least one offer, if not two or more, for more money than Los Angeles would like to pay him.”

NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Austin Reaves & Los Angeles Lakers Updates

This summer, the Lakers will have to make decisions on multiple members of the supporting cast. Seeing how this group performed following the trade deadline, the front office should try to retain them. Getting a full season under their belt together should help them to a step forward when it comes to competing for a championship.

Following his stellar run in the postseason, Reaves might be in line for a big payday this summer. The LA Lakers will have to brace themselves now to pay him a sizable salary if they want him on the roster long-term.
