The Celtics have a few reasons to do this deal. Firstly, it helps them avoid paying Williams.
Yes, they’re taking on a contract, but it’ll be a year shorter and attached to a more reliable contributor.
Secondly, it frees them from relying on Williams III. Again,. he’s injury prone. That’s not as significant to a rebuilding Pacers team as it is to a Celtics team that needs to be contending now.
Finally – they get Myles Turner. This is one of the best 3-and-D big men in the NBA. Turner’s ability to space the floor and protect the rim should make the Celtics a better team.
