The Portland Trail Blazers were big winners in the NBA Draft lottery as they jumped up to the third overall pick. As a team that is looking to compete right now, it is unlikely that they end up making that selection for themselves.

Despite having minimal success, the Trail Blazers have remained committed to building a contender around Damian Lillard. Because of this, rumors quickly emerged that Portland will be engaging in trade talks surrounding the third pick in the draft.

There are many routes Portland could go, and one might lead to them landing a star-caliber running mate to put next to their franchise guard. K.C. Johnson of NBC Sports Chicago recently reported that the Bulls could possibly enter talks of shipping Zach LaVine to Portland in exchange for the No. 3 pick.

“The speculation ranged from matters as bold as engaging the Portland Trail Blazers in trade talks centered on the No. 3 pick and Zach LaVine to lesser matters such as Patrick Williams’ future as he enters an offseason where he becomes extension eligible.”

This is the exact type of move the Trail Blazers are looking to pull off this summer. Bringing in a player like LaVine would give Lillard a legitimate running mate that can help him get back into the postseason. LaVine played in 77 games last year and averaged 24.8 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.2 assists.

Chicago is stuck at a crossroads after losing in the play-in tournament this season. They have multiple free agents on their roster, and their window to contend is dwindling. That being said, the front office might be considering blowing it up and starting fresh with a new young core.

From a trade perspective, Portland is an interesting partner for Chicago. Along with the third overall pick, they have multiple interesting young players on their roster. This could entice a team like the Bulls if they do decide they want to start fresh.

There’s still some time to go before the draft, but this type of move has the potential to be a draft night blockbuster.
