For some, this doesn’t make sense. Listen – maybe it doesn’t. At the same time, maybe it doesn’t have to make sense. 

If Harden returns to the Rockets, he’ll be effectively punting on his chance to win an NBA title. This has been one of the worst teams in the NBA for quite some time.

As talented as Harden is, he’s not going to singlehandedly elevate them to championship status. 

Nonetheless, he would elevate them. That seems to be a priority for the Rockets this summer. They’ve just hired Ime Udoka, and they owe their next draft pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder with top-4 protection.

Why not add one of the best floor raisers in the NBA? Sure, this will be a feel-good story. At the same time, the Rockets could use an elite ball-handler with distribution skills.
