Notably, this deal doesn’t have the Suns replacing Paul. It merely has them moving him. 

That’s got its own value. By now, Paul doesn’t look capable of starting for a contender anymore. The Suns could make this move and simply replace him in free agency. 

Meanwhile, they could also use some wing depth. This deal has them bringing some in. Covington fell out of the Los Angeles Clippers’ rotation this year, but he should still be useful in Phoenix. 

Finally, the Clippers are desperate for a point guard. Paul may be well past his prime, but with health, he should suffice for this deep, talented roster.
