Here, the Clippers are getting a fresh start. This isn’t about staying competitive. Far from it.

With this package, the Clippers are singularly focused on the future. 

This is likely as much draft capital as they’ll get for George. This is an aging, injury-prone player. With that in mind, three first-round picks feel like a solid return. 

Finally, Toppin is the only consistent piece in these deals. So he should be. Toppin is buried behind Julius Randle in the Knicks’ rotation, and that doesn’t appear likely to change at any time.
