The Atlanta Hawks need to make a decision. This team has two starting big men entering the NBA offseason.
Onyeka Okongwu has flashed significant potential in his brief career to date. This is a hyper-athletic young big with the versatility to guard multiple positions.
On the other hand, he can’t protect the rim like Clint Capela. Few can. As long as Capela is in his prime, he’s blocking Okongwu’s path to success. That’s fine in a vacuum.
It’s simply a poor allocation of resources. If the Hawks would make one or the other available, they could get something in return that isn’t so redundant.
There would undoubtedly be teams out there interested in acquiring Okongwu in a trade, which could help the Hawks to address other needs.
For example, look at this deal that sends Okongwu to the Dallas Mavericks.
