Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Firstly, we’re assuming the Mavericks are retaining Kyrie Irving here. If not, this is a moot point. After all, Dallas will be in an uncomfortable situation.
Pairing Luka Doncic with Middleton is not worth the cost of two first-round picks. The Mavericks will have assembled a team with a low ceiling and few assets.
So, let’s assume Irving is staying. If so, the Mavericks could seek a third star. It should probably be a 3-and-D wing who can create his own shot when necessary. That would be Middleton.
With this Big 3 intact, the Mavericks shouldn’t merely be playoff hopefuls. If all goes well, they’ll be championship contenders.

The Mavericks would probably need to determine if adding another huge contract as opposed to prioritizing depth additions would be the proper course of action.
