They moved a first-round pick for him. Now, they’re facing a summer where he’s heading for free agency. This deal has them rectifying that error to an extent.

They’re landing the elite defensive big they obviously coveted while earning that pick back. All told that seems sensible. On the other hand, the Raptors may prefer another course of action. They’ve already invested in Poeltl.

This front office may decide that they need to keep him at all costs and shake up their roster in another way. However, there is also the chance that Poeltl sees a favorable opportunity elsewhere and then the situation wouldn’t be up to Toronto.

There is always a risk when it comes to trading for expiring contracts. The situation in early February can look way different compared to how it all plays out just a few months later.
