This season, Dillon Brooks has been one of the most talked about players in the NBA. His in-your-face style has led to countless altercations on the court. One of the more recent being with LA Lakers star LeBron James.
Brooks might not be a star-level player, but he’s been an important piece for the Memphis Grizzlies. While guys like Ja Morant, Desmond Bane, and Jaren Jackson Jr. have led the charge, he does the little things like bringing intense perimeter defense.
The 27-year-old appeared in 73 games this season and averaged 14.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.6 assists. While some see him as a vital piece for Memphis, it appears the team had other plans this year.
During a recent episode of The Hoop Collective podcast, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst and Tim MacMahon discussed the Grizzlies forward. It was there they mentioned that the front office tried to trade him this season and that his days with the team might be numbered.
“We’ve talked about his awful shot selection a lot. This wasn’t an awful shot selection. It’s just awful shooting. And like it’s been at a point for a while now: They tried to upgrade at the trade deadline,” MacMahon said.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Dillon Brooks & Memphis Grizzlies Updates
MacMahon reported that Memphis pursued trades involving Brooks with wing targets in mind like Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby but proved unable to get a deal done.
“They threw four picks at the Nets trying to get Mikal Bridges. They really weren’t able to get the Raptors in serious conversations, but they would have given up a few picks to get OG Anunoby. They’ve tried to move on from Dillon Brooks already. I don’t know if Dillon Brooks is on this team after this series”
After this season, Brooks is set to become an unrestricted free agent. Based on these comments, it seems like Memphis won’t be prioritizing bringing him back in the offseason.
NBA NEWS & TRADE RUMORS: Dillon Brooks & Memphis Grizzlies Updates
There still might be some time for Brooks to change people’s minds within the organization. If he can put together a solid playoff run and help Memphis get past the LA Lakers, they might reconsider his status when free agency rolls around.
