Why The Phoenix Suns Do The Deal
Of course, this is not the type of return you expect to receive for a first-overall pick. That’s a moot point. A lot has changed since the Suns selected Ayton with the first pick. Having acquired Kevin Durant, this team can’t be focused on the future.
They need to focus on the here and now. With that in mind, this deal makes them a better team. Jones gives them a badly needed-lead reserve. So far, this team’s lack of depth has been problematic in the postseason. Trading one rotation player for two would help.
Moreover, Adams can make up much of Ayton’s production. All told, it would be worth the trade-off to land Jones – especially with Chris Paul aging. Jones could provide a needed, steady hand off the Suns’ bench, which is something they’ve lacked.
Something to take into consideration with this trade is the Suns aren’t in need of much offensive firepower at the center position. Steven Adams can be relied on to do the dirty work like a savvy veteran while they have better use of their spending.

Something to consider, Durant played quite a while with Adams when they were both members of the Oklahoma City Thunder. The bone-crushing screens Adams sets could free up Durant and the other dynamic perimeter players the Suns are led by in their offense.
