In the modern NBA, you don’t see a star get traded for another one very often.
Typically, a team that’s trading a star seeks a haul of draft capital. They’re looking to “blow it up”. If you’re trading a star, you’re usually starting a rebuild fresh.
Does that have to be the case? If two teams need a change, but don’t want to go through a lengthy rebuild, couldn’t they hook up and swap stars?
For example, the Toronto Raptors are widely rumored to be looking at major changes this summer. After firing Nick Nurse, it appears they have already begun to do so.
If the Atlanta Hawks flame out early in the playoffs, they could be too. They appear to have aggressively hit a hard ceiling with the need to make major changes.
Could they send Trae Young to the Raptors for Pascal Siakam?
