Why The Charlotte Hornets Do The Deal
Some Hornets fans may protest this deal. Rookie Mark Williams has had a strong season – why are they acquiring a starting big man?
Well, Williams hasn’t been so tremendous as to prove himself indispensable. Ayton is a far more productive player at this stage, and he’s young enough to be part of this core.
After all, Ayton may have warts. He is a somewhat limited player. He’s still a strong interior scorer with a deft touch around the rim. Ayton is also an above-average defensive big.
If Williams emerges as a clear starting caliber big, the Hornets can trade one of them down the road.

Following this deal, they’ll at least be certain they’ve got a starting big man to move forward with. Even if neither is perfect.
