A contending team approaches the NBA draft with different intentions than a rebuilding team.
A rebuilding team needs star power. Presumably, a contending team already has it. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be contending.
With that in mind, a contender may seek to satisfy team needs through the draft.
For example, when the Golden State Warriors selected Patrick Baldwin Jr. in the last draft, they were likely looking to add an elite shooter.
Here’s the problem: Baldwin Jr. is a rookie. He could become that player in time. At the moment, the Warriors don’t appear to trust him with playoff minutes.
Could they add a veteran shooter that they could trust instead?
