Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal 

At the risk of repeating ourselves, there’s a simple reason the Mavericks do this deal: it’s better than nothing. 

In all likelihood, this happens if Irving wants to join the Clippers. In that event, Dallas is doing well to orchestrate a sign-and-trade at all. Moreover, they could use the pieces they’re getting here. 

Powell may not be an Irving-caliber player, but he’ll still help ease Luka Doncic’s playmaking responsibilities. This is a solid scoring guard who will make the Slovenian sensation’s life a little easier. 

Still, the most valuable piece the Mavericks are getting here may be Covington. He’s a strong 3-and-D wing who can replace Finney-Smith.
