That would be reasonable enough. This is a championship-caliber team. The Celtics can’t afford to continue rostering a player who’s so rarely available. 

With that in mind, they wouldn’t dump his salary. That’s not what they’re doing here. Terry Rozier and a protected first-round pick is a significant return. 

Some Celtics fans may not love it. They’ll prefer not to part with Grant Williams, and they’ll protest that the backcourt is crowded. Fair. On the other hand, the Celtics seem unlikely to pay Williams as a restricted free agent anyway.

Meanwhile, Rozier is a more dynamic offensive guard than Derrick White. Simply put, they could move White in a separate transaction – perhaps to bolster their now weakened frontcourt depth.
