For New York, this deal depends on the circumstances around Harden’s departure. 

He would have to opt into that player option. Still, that shouldn’t be enough for New York. Flipping Brunson, Toppin, and a pair of first-round picks for a one-year rental would be shortsighted. 

Let’s assume the Knicks can reach an understanding with Harden that he’s going to sign a long-term extension. In that event, the only question is whether this team makes them a better deal. 

It should. Brunson’s growth in New York has been impressive. Still, Harden remains one of the very best playmakers in basketball.
