Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal
This deal has the Nets surrounding five first-round picks. That’s a lot. It’s worth it, and there are a number of reasons why.
The first one is obvious – they’re landing Jaylen Brown. He’ll be the best shot creator on this team from day one. Moreover, he’s a solid defender who will fit into this team’s defense-first philosophy.
More broadly, the Nets shouldn’t hoard picks with the intention of drafting and developing players if they’re not going to rebuild. Packaging draft capital for a star makes sense as long as Brooklyn insists on remaining competitive.
Finally, they’re getting off of Simmons’ contract here. The Nets don’t seem to view him as playable, yet he’s making a lot of money.
