Why The Atlanta Hawks Do The Deal 

The Hawks have a couple of reasons to make this trade. 

Firstly, they’re clearing some time for Onyeka Onkongwu. He’s looked the part of an NBA starter in Atlanta – he’s simply struggled to find time alongside Capela. Here, the Hawks are giving him the keys. 

Of course, they wouldn’t do this deal for that reason alone. That’s why they’re also getting a first-round pick and a swap in this deal. All told, the Hawks would do well to make up some of the draft capital they lost when they acquired Dejounte Murray. 

Meanwhile, the team could probably use Bertans as well. Granted, he’s generally seen as being on a negative contract.

Still, this team has a pressing need for front-court spacing. Bertans may be a defensive liability, but he sure can shoot.
