Why The Philadelphia 76ers Do The Deal
Once again, everything here revolves around Jame Harden. The former MVP has a player option this summer.
Rumors are rapidly spreading that he could leave the 76ers – possibly to reunite with the Rockets. Yes, the NBA is a crazy place.
If that happens, don’t be surprised if Embiid requests a trade. The Sixers are light on assets. They won’t be able to acquire a replacement for Harden if he leaves.
Why not re-up on assets? Once more – this deal has the Sixers landing the most draft capital a team has ever acquired in one deal. It’s also got them landing a young Defensive Player of the Year candidate in Claxton.

Of course, it also has them reuniting with Simmons. That’s inconsequential. They’d probably sit him until they could move him or buy him out. It’s unfortunate for Simmons, but immaterial to the Sixers.
All told, this is still a return worthy of an MVP candidate. Provided Harden forces their hand, that is.
