Why The Denver Nuggets Do The Deal
If the Nuggets reach their ceiling this year, they won’t be interested in doing this deal. After all, their ceiling would be an NBA championship.
Let’s say they don’t get there. Suppose the Nuggets win a playoff series, and lose in the second round. This team may decide that their current core, as well constructed as it is, isn’t title-worthy.
In that event, they may want to go all-in on a win-now trade. Butler may be aging, but he’s still a generally more impactful player than Murray. He’s especially stronger on the defensive end – given Jokic’s limitations in that area, that’s key here.
The Nuggets will miss Murray. At the same time, they can likely replace him with a low-usage point guard easily enough.

As long as that player spaces the floor, adding Butler should outweigh the benefits of losing him.
With that in mind – why would the Heat do this deal?
