Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal
Frankly, this deal makes sense for the Celtics on multiple levels.
Firstly, they’re unlikely to retain Williams. This team already had a hefty cap sheet to deal with. Williams is likely to make upwards of $20 million on the open market this year. That’s too rich for this team’s blood.
On the other hand, this may actually be a win-now upgrade. Williams is likely to earn that money because he’s young – some team will want to invest in his potential.
On the other hand, he’s not as good as Finney-Smith at this very moment.

Both are 3-and-D wings. They’re roughly equal as floor spacers, but Finney-Smith is the superior defender at the moment. He’d make this Celtics team even stronger next season, and he’d save them some money in the process.
Why would the Nets part with him?
