Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
The Wolves certainly had Gobert’s defense in mind when they acquired him. He was supposed to cover for Karl-Anthony Towns’ shortcomings in that area.
That hasn’t exactly worked out. Towns is limited as a rim protector – he’s even worse on the perimeter. The Timberwolves may do well to shift him back to the five.
This deal allows them to do so. It also brings in an elite perimeter stopper in Caruso. In all likelihood, he’ll be better suited to cover for bad rim protection than Gobert.
The rest of what the Wolves are getting here is one big gamble. Ball may never play NBA basketball again, and Williams may never fully realize his potential.

On the other hand, with a comeback from Ball and development from Williams, the Wolves could win this trade.
If nothing else, it could help them clean up the mess they made when they acquired Gobert.
