Having said that, there are ways off of the treadmill of mediocrity other than bottoming out. The Toronto Raptors are a great example of this. 

There was a time when this organization was middling at best.

It was always a realistic goal for them to reach the Eastern Conference Finals, but nobody ever expected them to contend for the championship in the end. 

That is, until they landed Kawhi Leonard. The Raptors won the 2018-19 NBA title after acquiring the superstar from the San Antonio Spurs.
