Why The Boston Celtics Do The Deal

The Celtics, on the other hand, will not be able to pay Williams “whatever he wants”.

This is one of the most expensive rosters in the NBA. That makes sense – the Celtics are one of the best teams in the NBA. Either way, somebody is going to give Wiliams a contract they can’t afford this summer.

By contrast, Tate is on a team-friendly deal for another few years. That’s the main draw for Boston here. Of course, they wouldn’t simply dump Williams for a scrub.

That’s not what they’d be doing here. Tate is a similarly multi-positional defender. He’s also likely a better playmaker, albeit a much worse shooter. Still, he’ll replace plenty of what Williams does – at cost.
