Deadline day is quickly approaching in the NBA. With only 48 hours until the clock expires, rumors are beginning to pick up as negotiations intensify between teams. One team that many people are keeping an eye on is the Toronto Raptors. As Fred VanVleet trade rumors have begun to pick up.
In the last few weeks, it has felt more and more likely that the Raptors were going to make some big moves to shake up their roster. Their core of VanVleet, OG Anunoby, Pascal Siakam and Gary Trent Jr. have all been involved in trade rumors to some degree. Alas, no indication was given about what direction the franchise was leaning in.
Originally, it was believed that Trent was the most likely to be dealt as he has a player option for the 2023-24 season and was expected to seek a raise. But, based on recent reporting from Jake Fischer of Yahoo! Sports, VanVleet is the one garnering the most traction toward being traded.
“Several opposing executives have since labeled Fred VanVleet as the most likely Raptor to be traded ahead of Thursday’s deadline. A pair of Western Conference contenders in the Los Angeles Clippers and the Phoenix Suns have been often mentioned as VanVleet suitors. The Lakers, Magic and Timberwolves have also registered interest in VanVleet, sources said. VanVleet is expected to decline his $22 million option for the 2023-24 season. In search of a pay raise that approaches a maximum salary and certainly north of $30 million.”

Figuring out what kind of trade package the Raptors can expect in exchange for VanVleet is tough to pinpoint. He is having the worst shooting season of his career since becoming a rotation player. Moreover he also possesses a player option this summer. As Fischer noted, VanVleet is expected to decline that and seek a raise as well.
That could knock down some of his value on the trade market as there is a chance he is only a rental for whichever franchise acquires him. However, with five teams reportedly registering interest, a bidding war could ensue.
The Phoenix Suns made a run at Kyrie Irving, so it comes as no surprise they have an interest in VanVleet. The LA Clippers’ point guard situation has been less than ideal this season. Acquiring a player of VanVleet’s caliber could help them cement their standing as a contender.

The Los Angeles Lakers also struck out on Irving, who was traded to the Dallas Mavericks. There have been some rumblings that they were angling for a VanVleet deal after he changed his representation to Klutch Sports, who have deep ties with the Lakers.
The Minnesota Timberwolves have underperformed this season after making a blockbuster deal for Rudy Gobert in the offseason. Without much draft capital, they likely have the longest odds of pulling off a VanVleet deal.

The Orlando Magic are certainly the most surprising team on the list. But, given how much they have turned their season around, it isn’t too surprising they are looking into making some upgrades. While the playoffs may be a long shot this season. They have an excellent foundation being built that VanVleet would help take to the next level with his skill set.
