Why The Brooklyn Nets Do The Deal 

This isn’t ideal for the Nets. At the same time, very little has been for them recently. 

Ayton probably can’t play with Ben Simmons. Meanwhile, Nic Claxton has been emerging as a Defensive Player of the Year candidate this season. Why are the Nets acquiring a non-shooting big? 

Well, this is about getting as much value as they can for Durant. The Nets may prefer to stay competitive – they owe their first-round pick rights to the Houston Rockets through to 2027. Unfortunately, they won’t receive a package that keeps them as competitive as Durant. 

Following this deal, the Nets would at least have plenty of trade value on the roster. They could trade Claxton or Simmons, or even Ayton this summer.
