Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
When the Mavericks acquired Wood, they had very different needs.
Specifically, they didn’t have a second option on their roster. With that in mind, they needed to cobble together the best platoon of offensive players they could. They don’t need to do that anymore.
After all, they have Kyrie Irving now. The Mavericks will structure their attack around him and Doncic moving forward. Suddenly, Wood doesn’t have the place on this team that he did before.
With that in mind, the Mavericks might as well trade him to upgrade their defense.

This deal does exactly that. Covington and Coffey are both far better point preventers than Wood. All told, this deal should give the Mavericks a little more balance.
