Of course, the Lakers were as widely linked to Irving as anybody. Plenty of fans were expecting to see a reunion between the mercurial point guard and LeBron James. 

In all likelihood, the Lakers had the same concerns that anybody else did about Irving. Committing a pair of future firsts to a player who’s developed a reputation for being unreliable may have been too substantial a risk for them to stomach. 

By contrast, LaVine does not present the same issues. He’d also be a perfect co-star for James. LaVine can create his own shot while spacing the floor for the all-time great playmaker.

Meanwhile, Caruso is one of the best defensive guards in the league.

The Bulls should be open to trading both. Their season is going nowhere, and these Lakers picks are highly valuable. 

Apparently, too valuable to spend on Kyrie Irving.
