The purpose of this deal is to split the difference between triggering a rebuild and maintaining competitiveness in the long run. 

In spite of the fact that Chris Paul may still be in decline, he is still a good player. It is quite possible that he will be able to help Kevin Durant lead a Finals run. As a matter of fact, that’s more of a testament to how good Durant is than anything else. 

On the other hand, Cameron Johnson is one of the better young players in the league. As a matter of fact, he is one of the best 3-and-D wings in the NBA when he is able to stay healthy. 

Meanwhile, the Suns have been able to find a long-term replacement for Paul here. Irving, on the other hand, is much less reliable, but he would not be available at this discounted price if he wasn’t reliable.
