Here’s the thing about a player like Doncic: they need help, but they don’t need much.

There may not be a better offensive player in basketball than this. There is no need for Doncic to have another MVP candidate on his team. However, he does need someone who will, at the very least, receive consideration for being selected as an All-Star. 

VanVleet has been invited to the annual showcase several times over the years. His ability to create his own shot and space the floor will make him a sufficient sidekick for the Slovenian sensation. 

No doubt losing Finney-Smith hurts, and if VanVleet doesn’t re-sign, it’ll hurt terribly. He will likely jump at the opportunity to work with Doncic as a teammate, and 3-and-D wings are more replaceable than shot creators at the moment.
