Granted, in any given economy, actors won’t trade assets for the same assets in return. 

The same holds true in the NBA. For example, draft capital is valuable because it’s a versatile asset. You can use it to draft your team or to trade for a star. 

The Detroit Pistons seem intent on building through the draft. Why wouldn’t they be? This group has already landed Cade Cunningham, Jaden Ivey, and others. They’d love to add Victor Wembanyama into the mix this summer as well. 

By contrast, the Knicks would seemingly prefer to trade their draft assets for a star. In fact, they almost did so this summer.
