In today’s NBA, the 3-and-D wing is a hot commodity.
Some would suggest that they’re commonplace. That’s actually a misguided notion. Sure, there are plenty of aspiring 3-and-D wings – how many of them actually fit those criteria?
Some wings are elite defenders that can’t actually shoot. Some are the opposite. Meanwhile, some wings are just mediocre in both areas.
For example, take Cam Reddish of the New York Knicks. This was supposed to be an elite 3-and-D wing with secondary shot-creating abilities.
Unfortunately, his three-pointer is inconsistent, and his defense is weak.
By contrast, Matisse Thybulle is an elite defender whose three-point efficiency has been absolutely brutal. Could the two change sides this season?
