Once again, the Lakers owe their pick to the Pelicans in the next draft. Tanking isn’t an option here.
Of course, with LeBron James still delivering at a prime level, it shouldn’t be anyway. With no disrespect to Lillard, James is different. This is a player who gives you an automatic chance at the NBA title.
Some would have them move Russell Westbrook in a bid to land an impact player. Fair. His fit alongside James has long been questioned.
At the same time, it’s looking better recently. It may be a smarter choice to hang onto Westbrook and make a move for a younger player on a cheaper deal. Simons would be perfect as a star-caliber shot-creating guard who spaces the floor.
