It didn’t have to be that. At the time, it was heavily rumored that the Houston Rockets were offering a package built around draft capital for Butler. Apparently, the Bulls declined it. 

It was a different time. At the same time, it worked out.

It’s unlikely that any player the Bulls could draft with one of those picks would have hit LaVine’s level. 

Perhaps this is a viable model for a trade. Should the Bulls accept it?
