Some people will tell you that money makes the world go around. It’s cynical. Depending on your point of view, it may also be true. If you have money, you have influence. If you don’t, you’re probably trying to change that. Either way, it certainly makes the NBA go around.

Teams need to manage their cap sheet. After all, as rich as the league’s owners are, few are eager to pay the dreaded luxury tax. 

That holds especially true if your team isn’t winning. Having an expensive roster without success to show for it amounts to a worst-case scenario. Unfortunately, that’s exactly where the New York Knicks currently are. 

The Knicks have made strides in adding talent in recent years, but they could still benefit from clearing out some of their unfavorable contracts. If they can add some draft capital? Even better.

The Los Angeles Lakers could be an intriguing trade partner for the Knicks to engage with ahead of the NBA trade deadline. Russell Westbrook’s expiring contract could pose a unique opportunity.
