Unless the NBA changes its lottery system, there will always be debates about tanking.
For the uninitiated: when an NBA team is said to be tanking, it means they don’t want to win games in a given season. After all, the more that a team loses, the better their odds in the draft lottery will be.
Some see it as a loophole. To be sure, losing games intentionally in a professional sports league is questionable. At the same time, it’s the best route some teams have toward improvement.
At the same time, some teams will resist it. For example, look at the New York Knicks. Many fans would have had this team bottom out in pursuit of draft capital this season.
Instead, the Knicks are surprisingly competitive at 17-13.
Should they make a deal that could make them more competitive?
