Why The Minnesota Timberwolves Do The Deal
This deal has a few benefits for the Wolves.
Firstly, it moves them off of Russell. That’s its own benefit. By now, it’s clear that he’s not a good fit with this roster. The Wolves could use a point guard who’s satisfied with merely spacing the floor.
That’s Lowry. At this stage of his career, he’s not going to do much besides play hard and knock down open triples. With Edwards and Towns on the roster, that’s all the Timberwolves need at the point guard position.
Perhaps most significantly, it nets them a first-round pick. Having surrendered a ton of draft capital to acquire Rudy Gobert this summer, getting a little back for Russell would be quite a benefit.
