Why The Dallas Mavericks Do The Deal
Avdija may be a little older than Hardy, and limited athleticism may mean that he’s got less upside. That’s fine: he’s better right now, and as it happens, he’s very good.
Avdija is exactly the type of multi-positional defender that modern contenders covet. He can guard more NBA players than he can’t, and that’s a rare and valuable trait in a wing.
Offensively, Avdija may not be a star, but he’s solid. Good passing instincts allow him to make plays for teammates, and he’s a capable floor spacer as well. All told, he’s the consummate glue guy.
He doesn’t fit all of Dallas’ problems, either. The Mavericks will still need an offensive co-star to pair with Doncic. Still, acquiring Avdija should make the team substantially better.

With a star like Doncic on the roster, that’s significant enough.
