For a long time, it’s been conventional wisdom that in order to land an impact player, the Lakers would have to package Westbrook with draft capital. Here’s a counterpoint: why? 

After all, Beverley and Nunn make enough combined to match a fairly substantial salary. Meanwhile, with Westbrook filling a valuable role for the Lakers lately, they may prefer to move those two role players. 

If so, they should be looking for a bad team with a good player. Enter the Charlotte Hornets. They’ve had a rough go in 2022-23 despite Terry Rozier’s quality performance. 

At this point, they may be looking to bottom out to improve their lottery odds. In that event, the Lakers should pounce.
