Why The San Antonio Spurs Do The Deal 

At first, after getting off to a 5-2 start, the Spurs initially thought to have established an identity that nobody was expecting. Are they a winning team? The answer: No.

More to the point: did they want to be? After all, they traded Dejounte Murray for three first-round picks this summer. The Spurs were expected to tank ahead of that historic draft class. So far, they aren’t making that easy on themselves. 

Perhaps that’s why Poeltl is rumoured to be available. He’s exactly the type of player that will help you win, but can’t drag you deep into the playoffs. Poeltl is a quality role player, and as a rule, teams without star players don’t need those. 

With this trade, the Spurs improve their odds of bottoming out. Moreover, they get a first-round pick in the process.
