Luckily, Poeltl can probably understand why the Raptors sent him to the Spurs. Realistically, they had no choice. 

Of course, Poeltl wasn’t the centrepiece of the package the Spurs received. That would be DeMar DeRozan. On the other hand, very few players aren’t expendable when you’re receiving Kawhi Leonard in return. 

Meanwhile, nobody could fault the Raptors for acquiring him now. After all, he led them to an NBA championship. The NBA is a star’s league – role players like Poeltl are important, but they’re nothing without a star like Leonard to lead the charge. 

Meanwhile, in 2022, the Spurs have no such star.
